BE A PART OF HISTORY! |
ATA 202 is more than just a historic vessel — it’s a living foundation, a working ship, and a community of people committed to preservation, education, and hands-on service.
Originally commissioned during World War II, ATA-202 served as a U.S. Navy auxiliary ocean tug, quietly performing the unglamorous, essential work of towing and recovery that kept the Pacific fleet moving. After military service, the vessel eventually became USS Comanche and has since transformed from aging artifact to revitalized mission platform.
The current ATA 202 Foundation formed following a leadership turnover, driven by a shared vision: to preserve the vessel not just as a museum piece, but as a fully operational, educational, and service-oriented platform. We’re restoring her systems, rebuilding her spirit, and redefining what it means for a historic ship to serve in the 21st century.
Our volunteer crew includes engineers, veterans, educators, mechanics, historians, and young learners. We operate with the belief that the best way to teach and preserve history is by putting your hands on it — whether that means restoring the main engine, plotting a course by paper charts, or running educational programs that tie together tradition, technology, and civic service.
ATA 202 is run entirely by volunteers and supported by donors who believe in preserving history with purpose. We are rebuilding the ship as we rebuild the organization — with transparency, discipline, and vision. Together, we are crafting a future where the Comanche sails not as a relic, but as a working symbol of perseverance, utility, and community.
This is our story — and we’re still writing it.
